![]() ![]() ![]() The disastrous effects of being lost in the FOG are confusion, crazy-making, people-pleasing, and an erosion of boundaries. When a person is being manipulated, they have a hard time figuring out who has the problem, what is normal, what is problematic, and if their wants, needs, and feelings are valid. The FOG is one of the main reasons that people stay "stuck" in abusive relationships for so long, why they continue to get involved with abusive people, why they feel they are the problem, and why they tend to feel that the abuse is somehow their fault. There is no shortage of people with well-intended bad advice out there who unintentionally fall into the FOG as well and push targets of abuse into keeping the relationship going. ![]() However, this type of destructive manipulation isn't just limited to narcissists and sociopaths. These three emotions are often how narcissists, sociopaths, and other types of emotional manipulators go about controlling others. The FOG is an acronym that stands for "Fear, Obligation, and Guilt". ![]()

There are also references to events covered in Saylor’s short stories, set during Gordianus’ early career (which is skipped over at alarming speed if one just reads the novels, as the first three novels cover nearly twenty years, the remaining seven just over ten years). There is only one instance in which an earlier book is actually referenced (footnote, publisher’s details and everything!) but the book is peppered with references to past events in Gordianus’ life and with more subtle references to the future. This book falls right in the middle of the Roma sub Rosa series, which focuses on Gordianus, and it shows. Although my very favourite Gordianus books tend to be the earlier ones, this is a long but excellent and entertaining entry to the series and features one of Saylor’s most complex and memorable portraits of historical figures, besides Cicero – his evocative characterisation of Catilina (Catiline). ![]() I first read this one years ago, while on holiday in Sweden, and re-read it recently for a class I’m teaching. The whole cat, dog, and bird conversations were hilarious and made me laugh more then once! Kyuu-chan accomplished that and alllll the warm fuzzy feelings! He really is too cute!! I found this especially true after reading this second volume because I've tried picking it up before now and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did now because I wanted something light-hearted. Now with that ramble aside, I forgot how much I love these characters once I started reading! While I could see this series being bingeable, but I think it's best to space out the volumes and read them every once in a while. ![]() I say "loosely" because this series continues to be a slice-of-life where it captures these two living together and there "random moments" of their everyday life with a few pages being a continuation of the previous "chapter." A great example of this is when we meet the little ghost, who has to be the cutest little ghost ever! SO adorable! Granted after the first few pages, I DID do a quick skim of volume one to make sure I wasn't forgetting too much and would say volume two is a loose continuing of the previous volume. While I didn't reread volume one before this volume, I think you can read it as a standalone and still appreciate the story. ![]() ![]() ![]() He was the nephew of Zeke’s boss and the boy who’d committed suicide in the house on Acorn Circle, an angry spirit who’d scared the bejesus out of her.
